In redefining our IT organization at EMC, we brought in consultants to bridge the old IT world with the new, devised a fresh strategy and workstreams to execute on our roadmap, and used added insights about our customers to define wins for IT. We still were struggling with several organizational components; we had not taken the leap fully into a services-based organizational structure. We had to address how teams worked together. Each group had its own goals and objectives, and what was important to our end customer was too often getting lost in the “interlock.”
Future Facilities has launched a version of its data center modeling software with new user interface that aims to take the “dark art” aspect out of computational fluid dynamics.
Called 6SigmaDCX, the software takes the user through the model building process in logical steps, simplifies access to objects in the model, has tool icons with detailed tool tips, drag-and-drop features, automatic object placement suggestions, and simplified presentation of object properties.
Your data center is a well-oiled machine processing massive amounts of user information, applications and complex workloads. You work hard to keep this machine running optimally with maintenance, powerful software tools, and knowledgeable engineers.
However, as more users connect and demand resources, your business model must evolve.
So how do you keep an eye on an ever-expanding data center platform?

If one of the leading causes of data center outages is human error, why do we spend so much time focused on the tier classification or rating of a data center? I would agree that the design plays an important part in reliability, but it’s a small part relative to people, process, operations, maintenance, lifecycle and risk mitigation strategies.
Let’s face facts: Your data center has become an integral part of your organization. In fact, many organizations are actively building entire business flow models around the capabilities of their data center platform.
So, downtime in the data center becomes unacceptable because downtime can cost companies millions of dollars per hour in lost revenue.
