NTT’s Osaka Data Center Build Illustrates Impact of 2011 Earthquake on Industry

It has been more than three years since the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the island country’s northeast. Aftershocks of the disaster are still felt by the country’s data center industry, continuing to shape its dynamics.

NTT Communications’ expansion of data center capacity in Osaka — way south of the area affected by the tremor — serves as an illustration (in both location and design) of how the industry is being shaped by the event.

Apple’s Reno Data Center Expansion Marches On

In preparation for the next phase of data center construction at its Reno, Nevada, campus, Apple has applied for planning permits to stand up more data center buildings there.

The company is asking for permission to build two more buildings at the site in Reno Technology Park, Reno Gazette-Journal reported, citing documents the company filed with Washoe County.

Microsoft to Expand Azure Data Center Infrastructure in Virginia and Iowa

Citing growing demand for Microsoft‘s cloud services (more than 8,000 customers sign up for its Azure cloud every week), Phil Sorgen, the company’s corporate vice president for Worldwide Partner Channel, announced in a blog post that the company will bring two new Azure regions online in Virginia (US East 2) and Iowa (US Central). The additional regions will help the company respond to what it says is a need to double capacity every six to nine months.

IBM beefs up its federal cloud effort with new data centers

In a sign that competition for federal computing dollars remains white hot, IBM said it’s opening two new data centers to run federal workloads on IBM SoftLayer cloud. The first facility, in Softlayer’s home town of Dallas, will open later in this month and the other, in data center-rich Ashburn, Virg. will come online later this year, IBM said.

Equinix Holds Grand Opening for Sixth Dallas Data Center

Equinix has completed its sixth data center in Dallas – a key interconnection point for southern-U.S. fiber routes and for links to Latin America. The company is hosting a grand opening for the facility, launched earlier this year, today. Among interconnection options at the new facility will be ExpressRoute, which will provide private network connections to Microsoft’s Azure cloud services.

ViaWest Opens Huge Denver Data Center

ViaWest has opened its fifth Denver-area data center. The Compark facility — the first greenfield construction project the provider has ever undertaken – is a  210,000 square foot building with 140,000 square feet of raised floor.

The news comes about two months after ViaWest launched a data center in Chaska, Minnesota, to serve the Minneapolis market.
